The Great Taste Awards is the world’s
most prestigious and authoritative food competition - without doubt, the ‘Oscars’ of
the world of fine food and drink. Organised by the Guild of Fine Food Retailers,
the Awards has carved a reputation over the last decade as the acknowledged
accreditation of quality for all speciality food and drink.
The judging criteria is without equal: 178
different classes ensure foods are judged like with like. Regional judging
events at the Speciality & Fine Food Fairs in Edinburgh in May and Harrogate
in June are followed by eight days of judging in London during July.
Every food is decanted and blind tasted by
over 150 judges working in teams and all entries judged to have reached the
Awards’ exacting standards are awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze. The
granting of these Awards provide producers with the highest recognition of
their craft and dedication to the making of superb food and drink.
A second stage of judging takes place a few
weeks later to identify the major trophy winners and finally, the Great Taste
Awards Supreme Champion for 2005.
The winners of the major trophies remain a
closely guarded secret until the glittering Awards dinner held in London
during the Speciality & Fine Food Fair at Olympia. A sumptuous gourmet
dinner is followed by an “Oscar” style presentation of trophy
winners, which is televised for broadcast at a later date.
The climax of the evening is the countdown
to the Great Taste Awards 2005 Supreme Champion, when one producer learns
their food has achieved the ultimate accolade in the world of speciality
food and drink.
Please note a major change of rules for 2005. The Guild
of Fine Food Retailers Management Committee has announced that all products
that won a Gold Award in the 2004 Great Taste Awards may not be entered
into the Awards for two years. Producers are, of course, allowed to enter
any other foods produced.
